Article by Frank Snell

Puppy biting is one of the major aggravations new puppy owners have to deal with. Biting, nipping and mouthing is a perfectly normal stage for your puppy to go through consequently there is no need to be worried if your pup begins biting you. With the proper knowledge, you can effectively stop this behavior. Puppy biting or nipping starts out as just a bit of fun, yet should be taken care of instantly to stop ongoing issues. When you’re trying to prevent puppy biting, keep away from games such as tug-of-war and wrestling, as these games also encourage biting.

As with all behaviors, it is important that your training is consistent and you make certain that everyone who plays with the puppy uses the same approach to stop puppy biting. People frequently wish to stop a puppy from biting without comprehending it’s an important part of their dog’s development. When endeavoring to control or stop puppy biting, don’t permit your dog to bite your clothing.

Commence training your puppy early in his development to avoid numerous likely issues for both you and your dog as he becomes an adult. You can stop puppy biting by showing your puppy who’s the boss the way in which his mother would have done. Frequently, puppies are separated from their mothers as soon as they’re weaned, so they don’t have an opportunity to find out the way to control their biting the natural way.

One of the most effective ways to stop your puppy from biting is to integrate him with other pups and dogs. If your dog is socialized at a young age, you will slowly but surely be able to stop puppy biting difficulties. When your puppy bites, it’s important that he is corrected immediately, otherwise he will only be perplexed. The general rule to fix puppy biting problems is to constantly encourage acceptable behavior and always discourage unwanted behavior. If you don’t clearly communicate to your puppy that the biting is inappropriate, he will not understand he is doing something inappropriate. Whenever your puppy begins biting say No. When puppies are biting and nipping one another it only stops when one pup lets out a squeal.

Puppy training for biting behavior is one thing you must commence early, and remain consistent with, throughout those first few months (particularly during the teething stage). Biting and mouthing are actually quite normal amongst canines particularly when they’re teething or playing. Biting is a normal behavior for young puppies and it rarely causes damage, however, it is very important that this behavior is stopped before your pet reaches adulthood. Biting may be cute and harmless with a 5 pound pup, however it is neither cute nor harmless when that dog has grown to adulthood. Biting behaviors that are not corrected will only become worse, and what seemed like harmless behavior in a puppy can easily escalate to serious, harmful behavior in an adult dog.

Biting is a common stage that young dogs go through, and when correctly handled, never has to develop into a huge problem later on. The great news is that most puppies can be trained to regulate and minimize the biting quite quickly.

The domestic dog has been with us for thousands of years and evolved into a multitude of breeds, all with distinct characteristics. Among these breeds are some of the most unusual and rare dogs in the world including those listed below. However, if you do decide that you would like to own a rare breed study as much as you can about the animal before you purchase.

Chinook: This dog is a working, sled dog and was first reared in New England around 1920. He is a cross between a Husky and a Mastiff. Each year approximately 100 puppies are born worldwide which is a clear indication of how rare this animal is. The Chinook still works but mainly in sporting sled events and the majority of them are domestic pets with a reputation for being friendly, incredibly good with children and very laid back. They are not aggressive but can be reserved with strangers. Prone to hip, eye and epilepsy problems this dog may need special care when he matures.

Chow Chow: The Chow is the lion of the dog family with his impressive mane and sturdy build. He originated in Mongolia and is possibly one of the oldest dog breeds, dating back to 150 BC.

Some health problems in dogs can be handled while some are almost incurable. There are some serious dog health problems which cause a lot of pain to them and could also be dangerous for others. One of the more serious health problems faced by a dog is rabies. This disease can be passed on to humans too making it even more dangerous. It is lethal to dogs as well as to humans, which is why it is important for the dogs to get routine rabies vaccines. Preventing rabies is important and it is necessary not to let your dog roam out of your sight especially on the streets. Dogs that have picked up rabies because of infection from another infected animal will show fearfulness, shyness, anxiety and changes in personality. Rabies infected dogs tend to overreach to sights and sounds and are restless and agitated, licking the original bite wound. At later stages, full blown aggression, disorientation and seizures follow. Paralysis in the neck and head region, foaming at the mouth and salivation are some of the other symptoms. Sadly, dogs suffering from rabies are usually euthanized as there isn

Article by Wenton Lee

The biggest challenge you’ll have whenever you bring your new puppy home is naturally getting him to go to the bathroom when and where you want. The second is breaking him of the habit of chewing on things you don’t want him to chew on, like the gorgeous carved legs of the couch your grandmother left you in her will. To you, it’s a treasured antique. To your dog, it can be just something else to gnaw.

You cannot cease your puppy from chewing. Like a human baby, it’s component of his natural way of exploring the globe and of dealing with the discomfort of his growing teeth. But thankfully, should you give him the right sort of chew toys and encourage him to make use of those rather than the furniture (with a lot of praise as well as the well timed treat), he could even grow to prefer his incredibly own outlets for his want to chew.

You’ll find a bewildering number of chew toys on the market, but they only need to satisfy several fundamental requirements for your puppy and you. Initial and foremost you may want a chew toy that is harmless. That indicates big enough for your specific puppy not to swallow (so naturally you may purchase him larger toys as he gets larger). You also want chew toys that are durable, so they will not break when he chews them, and washable, so it is possible to maintain germs down to a minimum. For your own sake it would be good if they were guaranteed at the same time. Some rubber chew toys can basically have puppy treats placed inside them. These can work out well for you AND your puppy.

What ought to you prevent when picking out a chew toy for your furry sidekick? Again, with safety in mind, don’t obtain chew toys with anything which will come off when your dog is chewing them, for example buttons, string, loose fabric or any other tiny parts. Once again, the identical common sense you would use having a human child you can extend to your four-legged infant. And forget that classic image of a dog chewing on a beloved bone. If he swallows one, they can wreak havoc on his digestive system until eventually they come out at the other end.

You don’t require to have a great deal of chew toys at any 1 time. But you should alter the assortment usually enough to maintain your puppy thinking about them and not the nearby ottoman.

Dogs, just like humans, can have allergies. In fact, about 10% of all of the dogs seen for allergies are seen due to food allergies. Changing up the dog food for allergies is simple; however, your faithful pooch may not like it so much. So the itching and scratching that they might be doing may not be due to fleas, but due to allergies.

It is not fully understood how a dog becomes allergic to a particular food, or ingredient to be more specific. Thankfully, we can recognize allergy symptoms which are similar to those found in humans and that they are treatable. Both the male and female dogs can be affected, and those between 5 months to 12 years can have allergies; although it tends to be more between the ages of 2 and 6 years old.

Symptoms – Allergies are allergies so the symptoms for pollen will probably be very similar to that to food. Itchy skin that is located on the face, ears, armpits, forelegs and feet as well as the anus can be affected. Symptoms can also include hair loss, ear and/or skin infections and hot spots. All of these symptoms will respond to a treatment of antibiotics but can occur once the treatment has been completed. Another common symptom that you may notice is an increase of bowel movements.

Food Trial – Is changing dog food for allergies a good thing to do? If you believe that the allergy symptoms are due to their food, then yes changing the food they eat should be done. What you want to do is put their current food on the back burner and provide a completely different food for a minimum of twelve weeks. We have been told not to change the food so quickly, but it must be done for your pet’s sake.

Choose a new food that is high in protein and good carbohydrates; try to choose a food that contains rabbit and venison as these are rarely used for protein in the more “popular” foods. Potatoes are great for the carbohydrates. In addition to changing the food, it is extremely important not to give any other food or treats to your dog. Bottom line, all they can have is water and the new food. I know this sounds mean, but it must be done to determine if changing dog food for allergies will work. Once the twelve weeks has lapsed, put your dog back on their “regular” food, and if the symptoms come back then you know that they are allergic to it.

If your dog is allergic, is there a type of dog food for allergies available that is nutritious? There are several brands on the market for allergies but the best type of food you can provide is that which is homemade. Offering homemade not only puts you in control of what they eat but you can control the portions of certain foods. Homemade doesn’t mean off your dinner plate, but fresh meats, poultry, fish, fruits and vegetables that you would give your own family. Homemade food is the best dog food for allergies.

Small dog breeds are great pets, but since their personalities are all different, it’s a good idea to look at their individual characteristics to see if they fit with your lifestyle.Pomeranians:Pomeranians developed from a much larger dog breed and seem to have retained the mellow character. They are good with children if they have been raised with them from puppyhood. They are playful and active. They tend to bark and require daily grooming.Chihuahuas:Chihuahuas are an interesting small breed. I have raised several herds – and that is a good word for a group of chihuahuas – and their temperment is a bit different from other small dogs. They can be very aggressive towards other dog breeds. I adopted one chihuahua who kept attacking a German Shepherd who finally bit her. After she got out of the hospital she went after him again. I ended up with her because she wasn’t going to quit attacking bigger dogs. Some chihuahuas will growl and nip at small children. Good points – chihuahuas are very loyal and affectionate. They don’t require as much exercise as other small breeds so they make ideal pets for apartment dwellers or older people. They are good with cats.Boston Terrier:Good with children and other animals, the Boston terrier is a good small dog for families. They are suitable for any lifestyle. They can be aggressive chewers. Their short coat is easy to keep clean.Jack Russell Terrier:This dog breed is only for the most active owners. They love to chase balls, can hop onto a table with ease and can be aggressive if not trained properly. Very intelligent and lively, they require a lot of attention and discipline.Maltese:This small dog breed can be very protective of its owner. It is not suitable for families with children because they are very fragile. Shitzu or Shih tzu:Good natured and non-aggressive, these friendly little dogs make great family pets. They require daily brushing but their hair is non-shedding. Good with other animals.Bichon Frise:These little dogs make good family pets. They are good with children as well as other animals. Very intelligent, easy to train and lively. Their coat doesn’t shred.Dachshund:Not a hound but a terrier bred to go after vermin, the breed is lively and affectionate. Good with family members but will become aggressive to children outside the family. They make good watchdogs and will bark frequently to alert their owners.Pekinese:Very fierce and loyal, these little dogs are not good around children or other animals. These are good dogs for the elderly. Their coats require a good deal of grooming.Skye Terrier:Great with children, okay with other dogs but not tolerant of cats. This unique breed makes a fine pet. Distrustful of strangers. The next step after selecting a breed is to find a reputable breeder.

Article by Tim Amherst

Pit Bulls are undeniably the most controversial canine pet at the current time. They are the first to be pulled into the media limelight, as anything they are accused of makes headlines people eagerly wish to read. Sadly, the Pit Bulls who have actually harmed humans are dogs who have been neglected and not properly trained.

Along with unfit owners, the myths which are perpetuated by the unlearned about Pit Bulls give the dog an undue bad reputation. Some of the more popular myths concerning Pit Bulls are circulated continually on the internet via chain emails, which get passed to millions of people who’ve never spoken with an owner of, nor had the pleasure of having a Pit Bull in their family.

These untruthful rumor mails always talk about a friend of a cousin’s uncle who knew someone who had a neighbor who met a guy that once heard something about a Pit Bull, and it’s never a good thing. Hopefully, this article will set the record straight on the matter, and expose them for what they are, which is an electronic viral email of ignorance.

Myth: Pit Bulls were specially bred from dogs which had a mutation in the jaw that created a locking jaw, and all modern Pit Bulls have these locking jaws. Once they latch on, they cannot release.

Truth: The locking jaw rumor is a myth. Pit Bulls are not physiologically different from any other breeds of dogs. This means that the Pit Bull has no special jaw or teeth which would make the dog have a locking jaw. It’s a bogus statement, which perpetuates the Pit Bull as a menace to any who may be around them.

Myth: Pit Bulls are by nature aggressive to humans, and make excellent guard dogs because of this trait.

Truth: Pit Bulls do tend to be aggressive toward other dogs, which is not a trait specific to this breed. As a matter of fact, most all breeds of terriers tend to be this way. Pit Bulls who have been raised by caring owners make very affectionate pets. Remember the dog from the original Little Rascal series? Well he was Petey, and he was a Pit Bull. Petey was praised as being one of the smartest dogs in film, and he worked with a horde of children.

Myth: Pit Bulls are notorious for turning on their owners without warning.

Truth: There is no evidence on record which states that ANY breed of dog has a natural tendency to turn on their owners on a whim. As a matter of fact, any aggression by canines is always preceded by some type of warning from the dog. Indeed, it is usually the owners inability to read the dog’s body language and signals which result in a dog turning on the owner. Any dog, regardless of breed, has the same chance statistically to change temperament on the owner.

As long as there are headlines to be made, and inept and uncaring pet owners, there will always be a target breed to satisfy our human need to have unreasonable fear of the unknown. The German Shepherd as well as the Doberman have both been the “dog to fear” in the past, and now unfortunately for the Pit Bull, it’s his turn to be unduly hated.

Change isn’t easy it takes time

Putting changes into place can take time and patience when the behavior has become a habit. It is very important to understand this as it can be especially difficult to understand why our dogs are barking. Patience is your key to success and you will be rewarded. Like when dealing with young children or family members you have to be understanding, patient and at the same time remain consistent in your approach. The same principles have to be applied with your canine friend, If for example nine times out of ten,you ignore your dog’s barking and on the tenth time you reward him with your attention, then he will learn that barking persistently works. A little like children, younger and older, once they know how to get around you and get away with something the problem only gets worse next time. You must decide on a plan of approach and stick to it. This includes all members of your family and anyone who comes in contact with your dog.

Praise him on positive behavior Everyone likes to be rewarded for doing something well and your dog is no exception. Receiving your acceptance and praise is extremely important to your dog and you can use this to your advantage. Reward him with things that he relates to pleasure such as food treats, toys or your praise whenever he behaves the way you want him to and he will behave that way more often.

Communicate with all concerned While you and your dog are working on overcoming the barking problem let the family members know what you are trying to achieve so they can be consistent in their approach. It may also be a good idea to let your neighbors know what efforts you are putting forth to solve the midnight barking sessions. As behavioral problems can take time to resolve. If they hear your dog continuing to bark they may assume that you are doing nothing to resolve the issue. Contact your local council too if appropriate and let them know you are working towards a solution. Most problems can be avoided if the channels of communication are opened not only from human to canine but also from human to human. Prevention is better then cure and it does make life easier.

Do what you can but know your limitations If you have tried to solve your dogs barking problem with little or no success, you are not alone. If you realize that you may need professional help your half way to solving the problem. Professionals work with this particular behavioral problem on a day to day basis. They would have experienced many different variations of the problem and will help you work through your problem to find a successful solution. Seeking professional help is the easiest way to a quiet life.

Remember

* Behavioral problems such as barking are common in our society today. If you have a barking problem you are not alone. * Barking problems can be better understood if you learn more about your dog’s behavior. * Seek professional help if you need it, until your barking problem has been solved.
