The technique used for crate training dogs helps them understand where to go to get relief for urination and defecation. Training a puppy takes patience and persistence but it will be worth it in the long run.  Keep in mind that crate training dogs takes a little longer than other types of training.  Dogs come to love going to their crate because it becomes their secure location, they will feel safe in this enclosure.  Training this way can become an important component of training your puppy.  Before putting the dog or puppy in the crate always take them outside to relieve themselves.  It is important to make your puppy want to go into the crate so offer a treat and a toy to encourage them.

Always use a crate that is appropriate for the size of your dog when considering this technique.  The crate should not be too big but roomy enough that the dog can turn around in it and can accommodate a soft towel and a toy.  A crate that is too large will encourage the dog to relieve himself in the crate. That is not what you want them to do.  If by putting the puppy in the crate the that comes difficult and fussy then give him a few minutes to settle down and then take him out. Always heap lots of praise when they do the right thing. If you take him out soon it only teaches him if he fusses more he will get out sooner.

Always make sure your puppy or dog gets plenty of exercise before and after he has been crated for a longer period.  Always praise your puppy or dog for good behavior and offer snacks and toys when you put him in his house.  A dog left for several hours during the day will stay out of trouble if he willingly goes into his crate and becomes comfortable. Dog trainers will recommend crate training dogs because it tends to eliminate many behavioral problems and if done correctly will make your dog very easy to live with.

The best time to start this type of training is when you get your puppy home for the first time.  Keeping the dog in the crate will prevent him chewing on anything that comes into view especially furniture.  Some breeders will introduce the puppy to the crate before going to a new home so it is important for you to continue the training.  This gives you a head start on potty training for your puppy.  A positive benefit of crate training dogs is that many hotels and airports will require that traveling with your pet.  If trained properly the crate becomes an enjoyable place for your dog.
