Crate Training A Puppy

Crate training a puppy involves several small steps. It can take days or weeks, depending on the temperament of the puppy.1. Place the puppys’ crate in a busy and secure area of the home where the family gathers. Take the door off of the crate and put a blanket inside. Take the puppy to the crate and encourage him to explore. If the puppy is hesitant, place some food around and just inside his crate. Coaxing him with a favorite toy may work as well.

2. Begin feeding the puppy near his new home and eventually inside. Once the puppy feels comfortable eating inside the crate, replace the door and close it. When the puppy finishes eating, open the door. With each successive feeding, increase the time opening the door to where the puppy feels comfortable in the crate with the door closed for longer periods.

3. The puppy can be left inside the crate for short periods of time while you’re there as long as he feels comfortable with the door closed. Praise the puppy for going inside the crate and sit beside the crate for a while and then leave the room. Repeat this process while gradually leaving the room for longer periods of time and then let him out of the crate. You will eventually be able to leave the home for short periods of time with the puppy in the crate.

4. The puppy shouldn’t be crated for longer than 20 minutes prior to you leaving the home. When you’re ready to leave, point your puppy to his crate with a treat and praise him.

Crate training a puppy requires patience. Once you have learned how to crate train a puppy, your ventures outside the home will become worry free.

My dog Codie loves his crate (which we call bobie bobies!!)
