Crate Training a Puppy

Crate training is very useful for house training a dog, as the dog is not going to want to soil their sleep/rest area, so spending time in the crate teaches them bladder control. It’s very important that you make the crate a place of comfort by lining it with a soft blanket, putting it in the living room or where people tend to gather, and putting toys and treats inside. If your puppy resists the crate at the beginning, you need to associate it with a safe place in the gentle way that you introduce it, and you may want to put the food and water dish right beside as well.

The whole idea of crate training is that it’s done when you are at home and monitoring your dog. It is an active method on your part. Each hour you should take your puppy from the crate, and immediately to the designated potty area. Give your puppy five minutes to do his business, and if nothing happens, take him back to the crate. Continue to monitor and expect to repeat this procedure within the next 45 minutes or so. When he does go, be sure to praise him repeatedly.

Make note of when your puppy actually goes. In time you will begin to see a pattern, and it will correlate to the puppy’s feeding schedule. This will allow you to avoid hourly trips outside.

Some things to avoid when crate training:

* Don’t crate your puppy for more than five hours at a time. If your puppy soils the crate, this can do severe damage to progress made.

* Don’t use the crate to punish your puppy. He will fear it and want to avoid it.

* Don’t lose your patience. If done properly, the crate training method can be effective within a couple of weeks.

* Don’t force your puppy into the crate. Tossing treats or favorite toys inside should be enough, and creates a positive association.

* Don’t use too big of a crate. This allows the dog to create a potty area within the crate separate from the sleeping area.

This should give a good basic idea of crate training and how it can work to speed up the house training process. The key is to be diligent and not use the crate as a prison cell. Your active participation and alertness will have you seeing the results you want in no time.
