Dog Obedience Training and Why it is Necessary

If you’ve recently taken a dog or puppy into your home, you may be a little worried about how to train him. A dog that is obedient is a real joy to have around. It is much easier to be friends with your dog if he obeys his master’s commands. The time you spend together will be playful and fun. But if your dog is allowed to misbehave, he will leave you feeling tired and frustrated. This is why your dog should have dog obedience classes.

If your dog does not receive obedience training, he may very well end up a problem dog. He will be the master and will have the household in chaos. He may mess the floor or chew your furniture or possessions. He could snatch food from your hand rather than take it gently. You could get complaints from neighbors about your dog’s behaviour. And the worst case scenario is he may become aggressive and bite the hand that feeds him.

It is important your dog has obedience training from the very start, whether his role is as a family pet or for protection of your property. There are self help courses and books available to help you to train your dog. Some of the larger pet stores hold dog obedience classes. And your veterinarian will also be able to let you know of teachers or classes in your area that he recommends.

For some ideas on training your dog please click HERE.

Dog obedience training does not need to be difficult. Some points to remember are:

You will want your dog to be obedient to every member of the family.

The key to getting your dog to obey at all times is to be consistent.

One of the best ways to reinforce good behavior is by rewarding your dog.

Do not strike your dog when he is disobedient because he might turn aggressive towards you. He might also become afraid of you.

Your goal is to achieve a strong bond of trust and love.

Obedience training does not need to be formal either. There will be opportunities for training even during play time.

Praise for good behavior and consistency are important in training your dog.

If you have small children you will want to make sure that they are safe in the company of the dog. Obedience training from the beginning will help to ease your worries about their safety. Babies love to pull at a dog’s ears and tail, so you will really want to be sure your dog won’t growl or even bite the baby for doing this. A well trained dog will either just get up and move away or see it as an opportunity for play. A good, obedient dog will submit even to a small child.

If you approach each obedience training lesson with an attitude of fun and excitement, your dog will pick up on this and be more responsive to your commands. Make it play time for both of you. And remember to keep plenty of treats in your pocket. It’s fine to be stern when you have to be, but remember to praise him to the highest when he does well.

If you treat your dog with love and respect, he will love and respect you right back. And if you are consistent with your obedience training, in a short while you will see an eagerness in your dog to do whatever you ask, because he knows it will please you.

Article by WellTrained Dog

If you dream of having an obedient dog, please understand that that yes, this IS definitely possible. The first and most important step is here in this article.

Even if you’ve tried and failed with dog obedience in the past (this is not your fault, you just need the right information!), don’t worry, if you begin with the steps we give you in this article, all other training will work far better for you and your dog.

If you are afraid that dog obedience is too difficult to understand, don’t worry, the foundation to all dog obedience is covered here in detail, and it’s really simple and straight-forward to put into practice. Lots of other dog owners have had great success with this and you definitely can too.

Have you ever found it difficult to get your dog to do as it is told?

The first step is to get the dog to pay attention to you.

How many times have you seen someone shout their dog’s name with absolutely no response?

So, to use this simple obedience training method, start by saying your dog’s name in a moderate voice without shouting, and if he looks at you say something like “Good!” and praise and reward him with a treat.

Repeat this a few times, but cutting out the treat on occasions. We don’t want an overweight dog who only does things for food. Another tip on that point is to take your training treats out of your dog’s daily food allowance.

When this exercise has been repeated successfully several times we can make it harder by getting the dog to pay attention for longer, maybe ten or fifteen seconds before praising and giving a reward.

If your dog approaches you in an effort to see where you are hiding any treats it’s best just to ignore him.

When we’ve mastered this we can try it in different locations and with different family members calling his name and commanding attention. The key to doing that is to reward the dog immediately (with praise) as soon as it gives you attention when you say its name.

Calling your dog’s name and getting a response quickly and every time is the first stage in getting your dog to do almost anything, as once you have his attention you can move onto the next step in your dog’s training.

From feeding time to going out for walks use your dog’s name on every occasion, but remember to be sparing with the treats, and eventually try to cut them down to a minimum as a special reward.

Use this great tip as the foundation for your dog’s obedience training, and the rest of the training becomes far easier.

Article by Jay J. Whoods

All dog owners want to have an obedient pooch. There seems to be a separation between those who have a dog that is attentive and obedient and those who have a dog that runs wild with reckless abandon. There are a few things that a person can do to have an obedient canine. Here are a couple of our top dog obedience tips.

Establish Dominance- This is one of the most important things that you can do in training your dog. Dogs are pack animals. They need a pecking order. It is very important that you are at the top of that pecking order. You can do this by being consistent in the discipline of your pooch. Have you ever seen a parent threaten to spank their child over and over and never follow through? This leads to a poorly behaved child. The same can result with your dog. If you do not follow through with discipline, your dog will be out of control.

Be Regular- Your dog wants you to be regular or consistent in your treatment of him. If you fail to do this you will confuse and irritate your dog. By having a routine that is regular your dog will learn to do certain things at certain times with less effort. For example, if you let your dog out to go to the bathroom at the same time every morning, he will automatically start to go to the door at that time. By developing a routine your dog can easily learn just about any behavior you want to teach him.

By using these dog obedience tips you can have a well behaved dog that you will be proud of. Of course there is much more to training your dog besides these dog obedience tips, and further research will round out your ability to train your dog.

It is fun to keep a pet at home but it also calls for a couple of obligations to fulfill. Take note that what your dog does is always out of habit. Thus, if you tolerate his bad habits, he will not be able to outgrow them. It will be you who will suffer in the end. So, it is best to start early with the dog obedience lessons.

Puppies are but young and don’t have a mind of their own. They are simply dependent on you so it is your task to assist them let go of their bad habits and develop the good ones. You and your leadership skills will therefore guide your dog towards the right path in terms of honing his behavior, habits, and temperament. This is the main reason why dog obedience and socialization trainings are very much necessary.

Training Your Dog at Home

Separation anxiety often attacks young dogs. So, they normally cry, bark, chew, and do a lot of annoying things. You have to understand that it is also hard for him to adjust to his new environment. Thus, you should start with the house training activities by setting boundaries, introducing new areas, and letting him know those activities that you can tolerate and not.

Don’t be violent when your dog doesn’t seem to understand at once. Potty training, leash training, and the likes are never achieved overnight. You have to use lots of praises, rewards, and encouragement. It is always best to start as soon as possible so his old ways will be corrected. Incorporate fun sessions during the training. Use commands frequently. Whenever necessary, impose a punishment but not something that will agitate him and cause him to fight back. Say for example you didn’t like his behavior, simply ignore him. He will surely try getting your attention but be stern not until he does what he is told.

Leaning the Socialization Skills

The dog’s socialization period is said to fall in his first 16 weeks of puppyhood. It is the time when he develops into an adult dog. Therefore, you must expect that it is also the time frame when he changes his temperament, behavior, habits, and character. The socialization period is also the time that he gets adjusted to his family and the people in the household.

It is best to let him become familiar with the house and the people around. It helps to expose him to some animals too. This conditions him that it is not only him that exists in that area. Take him out for a walk so he will see what lies beyond the gates of your home. In this way, he will not go wild whenever he sees other objects, animals, and people apart from the members of his family.

During the dog obedience and socialization training, you should arm yourself with a doze of patience. Your pet lacks maturity so it is your own responsibility to handle the matter really well. He imitates what he sees so you better act accordingly.

Dog obedience training!

As the name suggests, this is an important statement because this is what form`s your dog into the family member not just the canine lodger that gets under your feet. Llike everything in life dog obedience training must be done correctly, people are under the misconception that you aqquire your chosen dog,you feed it,you walk it, it sleeps, but the reality is there`s a bond that needs to be formed with your dog the same way you form a bond between yourself and your children!

Now theres all forms of dog training methods, dog house training, dog training schools, dog training books, use of a dog training collar, and also some teach potty training dog methods generally for puppy training programs (by the way not only do most dog trainers not teach this they dont`t teach it the way this particular dog obedience trainer does, but more on this extremely successful dog trainer later).

However it`s also how these techniques are implemented to gain your dogs trust and respect which is of the utmost importance before any dog training can begin! Personally i`ve used a great deal of dog trainers, i`ve used dog obedience training techniques and dog training tip`s from dvds, videos, books, which had some impact on what i was striving to acheive but never with long lasting results, so i then realised like i have mentioned that its the approach, attitude combined with technique all executed in the right way!

Dog Obedience In Simple Steps. 1. “Sit”!

May 12, 2011 by admin

Article by WellTrained Dog

You really can train your dog well, and have an obedient dog, given the right understandings and methods.

Even if you’ve not had success with dog obedience training before, this is not your fault. With the correct information on how to do it, dog training is simple, straightforward, easy to learn and effective.

Teaching your pup to sit is his first lesson. There are several good reasons why you should start with this command.

1, sitting comes naturally to dogs since they often sit to rest.

2 teaching the pup to sit is relatively easy, a lesson that he will learn very quickly.

3, you will find the sit position an excellent starting point from which to teach the other commands. When the pup is sitting, he is quiet and under control.

4, Sit is a very useful command with your dog. For example getting him to sit at intersections when walking, can be really helpful.

Dog trainers used to advise training a dog to sit by pulling up on the leash and pushing his bottom down. This can work, sort-of, but is not the most effective method. Most professional dog trainers now recommend the following method which is better.

Use small treats. With the dog standing, take one treat, show it to him in front of his nose, then while his attention is on it, move the treat upwards and slightly backwards, and he will naturally sit down. As he sits, say “sit”, praise him a lot and give him the treat.

He will soon associate the word “sit” with the action of sitting. This is more effective than trying to teach him by pushing his bottom down, because then he’ll associate the action of you pushing his bottom down with sitting, which is far from ideal as you can imagine!

Repeat this process then gradually try using just the word “sit” without showing him the treat. Of course, praise him lots as soon as he sits when you say so.

This method will enable your dog to learn to sit easily, and can also be learne by watching it on a video.
