I know from experience that even the best dogs are not always well behaved and do have behavior issues. Just imagine trying to deal with two English Mastiffs, and a little Yorkie Poo. They are next to impossible to deal with when they are all together which is quite often. However, you can learn the tips that I did and how I found out how to control my dogs better than I have ever managed to before! Some of the things I am going to tell you about is training, positive reinforcement, and consulting with your vet to rule out possible health issues.

One of the first things that I had to do to help me out with my dogs was find a dog training course. My husband was not to keen on the idea, but after they were obedience trained he was quite happy because they were no longer dragging him thru the backyard. So that little training helped out tremendously. I feel that training can help dogs of any age or size. They can even help with dog behavior issues.

The next thing that I did to help address my dogs behavior issues were to start with positive reinforcement. I know that is a simple psychological issue to deal with the issues, but it does work quite well. I found that when they misbehave if I ignore them and not show any affection of any sort towards the dog it manages to change their attitude quite quickly. Most dogs do love having attention given to them and without that attention then they typically will correct the bad behavior quickly. However, you must remember that when the dog does something good you have to give them affection right away. I usually give a pat on the chest which according to classes that I have went to makes them feel proud of what they did. I have used treats as a reward at certain times mainly when training them to come after I let them off of the leash.

While those solutions typically work for dealing with your dogs behavior you might have to consult with your vet to help address the issues. I have had to do that for my cat even because her behavior is so terrible. Sometimes as is the case with my cat he prescribed medication for her. That could be what your dog needs to correct any behavior issues that keep recurring. Remember that your sometimes your dogs behavior could be caused by health issues so be sure to check with your vet before trying anything else.

So if your dog is having behavior issues you can try a variety of things. Some of those things include consulting with your vet about possible health issues, positive reinforcement, and dog training. A combination of all those things maybe required which is what I had to do with my dogs. Mainly the training and positive reinforcement which seemed to help out the best since they were only puppies, but in your older dogs it maybe that they are experiencing health issues so you do have to take into account the age of your dog before taking any steps to correct the behavior.

If you’re in the middle of trying to accomplish some dog behavior training and are ready for some quick tips and hints, keep reading.

Tip #1 – Reward, reward, reward.

Far too many dog owners concentrate only on punishing their pet when it comes to dog behavior training. The real key to getting your puppy or dog to do what you want is to consistently reward his behavior when he does it. This is important for example during potty training. Simply chastising him when he messes in the house is not enough. When you get him outside to take care of business, be sure to immediately pet him and give him positive attention when he’s done. This way he associated going potty in the right place with his owner’s approval. Dogs crave that approval more than anything, so it’s important to use that consistently during dog behavior training.

Tip #2 – One step at a time.

It’s a common occurrence among new dog owners to completely overwhelm their dog with all the tricks they want them to perform. It’s something like playing with a new toy – you just want to go through all the features and options right away. For dog behavior training you need to slow yourself down and concentrate on one thing at a time. Teach him how to sit and practice this for at least two weeks before you introduce another command. Remember, dog behavior training can be a bit overwhelming for the dogs and the owners so trying to accomplish everything at once is just going to be too much for the dog and for you. So slow down and be patient, with the dog and with yourself.

Tip #3 – Have fun!

Once dog behavior training becomes irritating or overwhelming, it’s time to step back a bit. Be patient with the dog and remind yourself of all the reasons you got him. While not always fun and enjoyable, dog behavior training shouldn’t be devastating to you or the dog either. So if you find yourself resenting your dog or thinking that perhaps you’ve made a mistake, take a deep breath, and then take yourself and the dog out for a long walk – and have some fun along the way!

Today I am going to show you how to read the tail of your dog. A big misconception is that if your dog is wagging its tail, your dog is happy. A lot of dogs wag their tails when they are about ready to attack as well. So the big thing to notice is that when your dog has the tail tucked then that means your dog is afraid and you should not be petting him at that time. You never pet a dog when he is afraid cause you will just make him more afraid.

If it is just laying normal loosely, or he is wagging his tail in the middle that means he is happy, that is a normal state of mind. When the tail is up in the air erect and wagging that is when you can tell that your dog is probably in a more aggressive state of mind.

Another thing about dogs when you are walking them and you see their ears perk up that means that they are paying attention to what is going on around them. You can see a lot of times they will get this intense stare when they are fixated on something. As soon as they are fixating on something that is when you need to correct the dog. When a dog becomes fixated on something that is them becoming obsessed with that object whether it be a person, another dog or another thing.

So it is alright for dogs to look and stare, but if they get that intense obsessive stare, then they are threatened and that needs to be corrected immediately. They are many ways you as the dog owner can do this, but it would mostly depend on the obedience training that your dog has gone through.

Dominant Aggressive Dog Behavior – Identifying The Problem and How To Correct It

To really understand why dogs have dominant behavioral problems you first need to realize that they have some of the same instincts as their ancestor, the wolf. While dogs will lick each other’s faces when they want to give a super nice greeting, this instinct comes from the wolf family where the lower ranking members of the pack will lick the faces of the higher ranking wolves (called the Alpha) returning from a hunt.

Let’s look at a good example of a dominant dog. Have you ever noticed two dogs playing together and one of them will rest their paw (or both paws) on the shoulder of the other dog and then put a bit of downward pressure on them? This is called “Teeing-Off”. They are expressing dominance. The motivation is the same when trying to dominate their owner, except in this case they will put their paw on your arm when you lean down to pet them. In the case of them jumping up on you when coming through the door, they will jump up once and try to lean on you which will also express dominance status over you.

You need to realize that a disobedient aggressive dog isn’t necessarily a dumb one. If they don’t listen to you and push and pull you around, they may have decided not to recognize you as their superior in the pack hierarchy (while still thinking the world of you as a companion!). Whether it’s male or female, a dog that consistently jumps up and leans on you may be exhibiting one of many behaviors of the signs of “Alpha Dog” or “leader of the pack” which again comes as an instinct from their ancestor, the wolf.

If you suspect that their jumping up is in fact an expression of dominance, then your training will need to involve heavier corrections. You may need to do more than simply ignore the dog while jumping and train them to Sit and Settle before getting your attention. For instance, water squirting, sharp “growling,” or even forcing the dog down and holding them down until they sit still are all corrections that will short circuit this behavior.When you have visitors and your dog shows this type of behavior, you need to make sure you have established your position as the dominant member of your pack because your dog should never be allowed to position himself in front of you when the front door opens. It is a good practice to give a calm and firm “Stay Down” warning in advance just before you open the door for a visitor. Your dog will be responding to your sense of composure and assertiveness, and start to truly believe that there is no real reason to freak out every time the door opens. We all love our little (and big) canine friends and sometimes think we’re being mean when we have to train them, but don’t worry, your dog loves you unconditionally and will eventually realize you are in charge. Trust me, you and your dog will both be much happier.
