How to Control Dog Barking

Article by Alex Kelly

Nothing is more irritating than the next-door neighbour with the constantly barking dog that never stops. You can’t escape from it when you’re in your home and if it’s your dog you feel annoyed and agitated. Of course it’s completely instinctive for your dog to bark, it’s how he communicates with you and fellow animals and how he alerts you in a potentially dangerous situation. Getting to know why he barks when you don’t think there’s just cause, is your first step. You need to establish what type of barking your dog is doing. There are so many different types. Is it just playful behaviour, is he responding to another dogs bark or does he want your attention because he’s worried about something? Boredom is another big reason why your dog may bark, if they’re not getting enough exercise, attention or if they’re being left on their own for long periods of time they will most definitely bark. Also know that your dog may also be trying to talk to you. He may be frustrated or concerned about something. When you leave he may be annoyed because he doesn’t have everything he needs – water, food, access to toys etc.

So, Where to Start?

Very gently and done with care and sensitivity, hold their nose and mouth (muzzle) together for a short time, whilst in a calm manner saying “quiet or shh.” Obviously when they’re out playing, let them bark and communicate with other dogs, they’re only chatting and saying hello.

Dogs like us, get lonely. If you’re out at work all day and your dog is left in an empty house of course he’s going to bark out of stress and loneliness. So try and come home for lunch, get a friend to drop in or treat your dog to walks with other dogs. There are so many dog walking companies around these days and you don’t have to do it every day as obviously cost is a factor. Also allowing your dog to interact with other dogs in a group situation will let him expel some of that chattiness and energy.

Don’t shout or hit your dog, it’ll get you nowhere. Would you respond well to someone smacking you every time you spoke? I don’t think so. Also most dogs will become even more aggressive as they will see this as you attacking them, so you’ll just make the situation worse.

Try to distract your dog. When they start barking, grab his favourite toy and play with him. Whistle or clap your hands to detract from the reason why they started in the first place.

Exercise!!!!! This is so important. Getting rid of excess energy not just on a daily walk, but proper running in the park will release so much pent up frustration for your dog, that when they’re home they’ll be happily exhausted.

Give your dog lots of attention. No one likes to be ignored. A bit of love and emotion doesn’t go amiss and why would you bother having an animal if you didn’t want affection from your pet?

Leaving your dog outside all day is a fast way to encourage barking and is extremely lonely for him. It’s also a very quick way to annoy your neighbours.

Lastly, these things all take time, so be patient. Just as you have to learn what your dog is saying, he has to learn to understand you too.

Causes of Dog Barking

First: establish the CAUSES of the dog barking

Whining, barking and howling reflect a dog’s emotional state. Forexample, a dog that is excited or startled may bark to express itsagitation.

It is important to bear in mind that your reaction to your dog’sbarking or whining will directly determine its behaviour in thefuture.

Second: establish the WHEN and HOW LONG he barks

You may need to do some detective work to obtain this information, especially if the barking occurs when you arere not home. Ask yourneighbors about the noise, drive or walk around the block and watchand listen for a while, or start a tape recorder or video camera whenyou leave for work.

Once the above have been established, each needs ot be addressed. To help establish the above, we have divided the many reasons why adog barks into 4 categories

The Alarm Barker : It is ironic that barking dogs are such aproblem in our society, considering that barking as an alarm musthave been one of the main reasons we domesticated dogs in the firstplace, and one of the reasons we live with dogs today.

A dog that barks at the presence of intruders can be a valuableasset. In fact, most people want their dogs to let them know whensomeone has stepped onto their property. It only becomes a problem ifthe dog does not settle after a few warning barks.

The Attention-Seeking Barker : Dogs are quick to learn whichbehaviors are rewarding and which are not. It only takes a fewrepetitions for your dog to figure out that barking is an effectiveway to get your attention. Whether you ask your dog to stop by askingnicely &endash; or yelling angrily at the top of your lungs &endash;attention is attention for some dogs. Whether you are happy or madyou are still interacting with him, and that’s why he was barking -to get your attention.

Your dog can learn how to behave in ways that attract attention ifyou reward its behavior with attention. If your dog barks when itsees food and you then give it food, the dog will learn to bark forfood. The dog may then learn to bark in a variety of situations, manyof them inappropriate, for a reward. The reward may take many forms, including food, praise or petting.

Even in the form of punishment, negative attention is stillattention… and he gets your attention so his barking issuccessful!

Sometimes the best way to deal with the attention seeking barkingor whining is to simply ignore it. As difficult as this may be, keepin mind that you encourage barking by giving your dog ANY attention, positive (reward) or negative (punishment).

The Yard Barker : Barking dogs are one of the most commoncomplaints of neighbors. With a continual stream of visual andauditory stimuli, a dog left outside may raise the alert at everyinstance. Each noise and person or animal passing by is likely to getyour dog into a barking frenzy &endash; not a great way to stay inyour neighbors’ good graces!

The Owner-Absent Barker… isolation… boredom… loneliness :A dog that is not accustomed to being alone may become anxious whenisolated or separated from a playmate or human companion. Thisanxiety may be expressed by whining, barking and howling. The dog maybark or whine only in the first moments following separation, or maycontinue the entire period of isolation.

Barkeing may precede other forms of separation anxiety, such asdestructiveness, inappropriate elimination and excessive grooming (eglicking of paws). It is a fact of life that most dogs are left alonefor long periods of time and being social animals, it is hard fordogs to understand why their families leave them. As a result, theymay bark due to stress or just plain boredom.

Some questions you need to ask yourself to deal with the causes ofbarking:

- Is he left alone for long periods of time without opportunitiesfor interaction with you?

- Is his environment relatively barren, without playmates or toys,to amuse himself?

- If he’s a puppy or adolescent?

- Does he have other outlets for his energy?

- Is he a particularly active type of dog

If any of the above apply, then you need to address these issuesin order to stop the excessive barking. On VIPdogs.com we providenumerous tips and help for this issue, including extensive trainingtips.

Not all of them is safe to the dog (you will know which kind of them hurt your dog via the information below). These collars are sold widely on the Internet. Local pet stores sell them as well.

Each type of collar works based on battery power. They have theirs own features in terms of preventing irritating barking. Here are some insights about three kinds of anti bark dog collars you should know in order to make informed decision.

The first kind of collar is citronella anti bark collar. If you do not know, citronella is a plant which is usually used in the perfume industry. It is natural material and so it will never hurt your dog in any way. However, most of the dogs do not like the smell of citronella. They feel uncomfortable when getting this smell. So, they fight to protect themselves from getting the smell. That is why they stop barking as they do not want to get sprayed citronella oil in their snout.

The next type of collar is called static shock collar. They work by providing static shock to the dog anytime he starts barking above a certain decibel. You can adjust the level of shock from low to high depending on the dog’s barking behavior. However, many people claim that these collars hurt their dogs. They think that it is cruel to use a shock collar. So, if you want to use a static shock collar, you have to ask your vet about your situation.

The last form of no-bark control collar is high pitched sound collar. These collars are also called ultrasonic collars. They use high frequency sounds in order to disturb the dog when he is barking loudly and endlessly. Human cannot hear this kind of sound while the dog can hear clearly. They dislike the sound, so they stop barking excessively. One disadvantage of these collars is they can be activated by noise that is not created by the dog wearing the collar. This means the dog can get the corrective signal, even if he does not bark.

There are differences between each kind of anti bark collars. However, one useful benefit of them is you can adjust the length so that the collar will not too loose or too tight. This makes sure the collar fits perfectly to the dog neck and works properly.
